As the world searches for answers, we’ve marked this strange time adventuring close to home. Mostly isolated, with a seemingly endless open schedule, the girls developed a fascination with nature in the confines of our community. There was an otherworldliness tone to our days that helped push us outdoors where tensions were exhaled. We fled to woods and streams with hearty souls and sturdy feet.
And yet, feelings of sorrow, trepidation, and guilt wrapped us back up at night like a weighted blanket. The opportunity to support others was there for us to seize. As the world shrunk in size, we connected with teachers, shops, and doctors like a scene from The Jetsons. An art teacher from Berlin helped us through rainy days while a small shop in Solvang, CA outfitted us for the sunny ones.
In California’s Santa Ynez Valley, the picturesque Danish-style town of Solvang is one of our nation’s little known treasures. Our travels would have taken us there in June but the world had other plans. While we defined this time in a way that made sense for us individually, a wave of global connectivity brought distant communities together and led us to Solvang’s Atterdag Kids as if it were steps from our home.
Our finds were the treasures that kept us going through the dark days. California based brand, Isobella & Chole, made for princess moments in tall grasses while waterproof and hiker-friendly Native Shoes grounded us through mountain streams. Togetherness and faith were found during our time of exploration. We pressure on with the hope of meeting again in person, one day soon.
